Summary: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a respiratory problem that interferes
with people´s quality of life. Its distinguishing characteristic is the repeated
occurrence of partial or complete obstruction of the upper airways during sleep, resulting in breathing interruptions and frequent awakenings throughout the night. Considering the comfort of patients, heart rate variability (HRV) has been used as a non-invasive tool in research related to cardiovascular diseases. In this study, the heart rate variability (HRV) signals of 30 individuals were analyzed, considering those with normal breathing and those with disordered breathing (with apnea). Methods were employed to analyze the characteristics of HRV in the time domain and frequency domain. The results show that the obtained characteristics in both domains are significant in predicting OSA. The proposed method achieved an accuracy of 80% in predicting OSA.
